History From Your Roots

Scope and Sequence ~ for grades 4 and up

Goals, and objectives –

The student will learn about American history from a personal perspective. This will be done through tracing their family tree and correlating persons related to them to events in history. Learning history this way will create a more natural reason to remember historical events and when they took place.

The students will learn about assembling their Family tree and then begin to progress through American History through researching and writing in response to questions that draw thought and reflection about events and how they affected the people living at the time they occurred.

The students will learn how to do both historical and genealogy research on the Internet and at the library. The students will be expected to write grade appropriate responses to questions and assignments, as well as oral reports. Students will learn how to properly track their sources and you can show them how to use footnotes in their writing.

Through this class the student should gain a greater knowledge of history as well as appreciation for the people that came before them.

If you choose to you can also incorporate this unit study as a part of your English curriculum. This is done by assigning relevant reading, vocabulary and spelling each week and using various types of written reports for writing practice.
